Standards Based Grading

What is it?

In first grade, we use a standards based grading system, similar to what you are used to from kindergarten.
As we introduce a new standard, we will practice as a whole group, small group, and individually, until each child masters the skill.  Some students will take longer than others, depending on their strengths.  That is ok!!!   We have all year!  The goal is that by the end of 1st grade, your child will master all (or at least most) of the standards.
If there is ever a time that I feel your child needs extra practice, I will let you know how you can help at home.

Grading Scale:

MP (M): Mastered with proficiency: Your child has mastered this standard.

D: Developing: Your child is on the right track, and is working towards mastery of the standard.

NY: Not Yet: Your child is not quite where we need them to be, and will need some additional assistance.

***Please note that some standards will be introduced early in the year, but will be built upon throughout the year.  This means, that you may see a D (Developing) until the end of the school year for some standards.   Again, this is ok.  Many standards have sub-standards, and although we may introduce a skill, we won't even teach every aspect of that standard until later in the year.

Portfolios:

Each week, your child will bring home a portfolio, filled with their work.  Some things will be placed in the front pocket.  These items may be removed each week.  However, some things will be placed in the 3 rings of the binder.  Please DO NOT remove these papers, as we like to keep them for our records.   Most items in the 3 rings will be graded (with either an M, D, or NY), so you can see how your child is progressing.  If you notice something with a NY, please help practice this skill at home.  ***Feel free to ask me for ideas if need be.
The purpose for these portfolios, is to keep you informed on your child's progress.  We also will include the standards that we are focusing on each semester.

Report Cards/Interims:

We will not send home interim reports, since we send the portfolios each week.  However, I would be happy to meet with you to discuss how your child is doing at any time.  There may be times that I will request a conference too.
Your child will receive a report card, listing each standard, and including either an M, D, or NY by each standard.  Receiving either an M or a D means that your child is progressing exactly how he/she should be.

If you have any questions about our grading system, please do not hesitate to ask.  I personally LOVE it!!!  It helps me know exactly where your child is in every area, and helps me know who needs additional help with each skill.
